South Dalmatia

South of Cape Ploča not far from Rogoznica – sailors and sailors more often call it Punta Planka, the Adriatic changes noticeably.

Densely strung islands of the middle Adriatic, here in the south, larger and somehow more “serious” islands with high dark green shores take their place. The most distant ones, Vis, Lastovo and Sušac, and a few smaller islands that huddled next to them, reign in their solitude exposed by the blows of the open sea.

And even further, more than half way to the Italian coast of the Adriatic, the high cliffs of Palagruža stand alone.

In the south, the nautical routes are different. The distances between the ports are longer, there are fewer suitable bays, marinas and shelters than in the north. And the winds are more serious – southerlies and strong mistrals raise bigger waves in wide channels than those that can develop in the labyrinth of the middle Adriatic.
